Coloratura Made Easy:

This Week’s Arietta by A. Caldara

Dear friends,

I know how overwhelming it can be to find new repertoire, especially when you're just starting out. That's why I've decided to start sharing my favourite beginner-friendly coloratura arias and art songs more regularly!

This week's selection is the beautiful arietta “Selve amiche, ombrose piante” by A. Caldara, which some of you might already know from the Arie Antiche collection by Parisotti.

Even if you're already familiar with this piece, I invite you to take it on as this week's challenge and use it as an opportunity to refresh your coloratura skills!

I particularly love this arietta because it offers several wonderful learning opportunities:

  • Slow and controlled coloratura: The tempo is not as fast as in much of the traditional coloratura repertoire, allowing you to work on agility gradually and with precision.

  • Ear training: The intervals are not always easy to get right, making it a great exercise for developing your musical ear and intonation.

  • Dotted rhythms: The coloratura is naturally written in dotted rhythms, which are a fantastic way to develop agility and rhythmic precision. (I usually ask my students to practise rhythmic variations, but in this case, they're already built into the music! 😊)

Happy practising! ❤️
