I CAN’T SING COLORATURA !
5 Reasons Why Your Coloratura Runs Aren’t Running (yet!)
First of all, take a deep breath and remember: you are not alone! We’ve all struggled with coloratura at some point, and every day I get dozens of singers asking how they can improve their runs.
Here are 5 common causes of coloratura problems:
1) Lack of training
How can you expect to deliver perfect chromaticism in “Je veux vivre” or tackle the endless coloratura of “Rejoice” without ever doing specific preparatory exercises?
Coloratura is a language - how can you speak it fluently if you don’t know the vocabulary?
2) Rushing the practice
Imagine yourself as a toddler: did you learn to walk or to run first?
We all know the answer. So why rush your coloraturas before making sure you can sing them slowly with control?
3) Psychological blocks
Maybe you - or someone around you - once said you’re “not good at coloratura”, and it became a belief.
Breaking beliefs is hard, but I will never stop saying: EVERYBODY CAN SING COLORATURA.
It just requires the right repertoire, mindset, and guidance. You can do it - each of us can, in our own way!
4) Repertoire mismatch
This was me. I was given coloratura arias that were too “light” for my voice, which created tension and made runs nearly impossible.
The day I began exploring different repertoire, the coloraturas finally started to come. Of course I still had to practice, but repertoire matters more than we think.
5) Musical clarity
If the pitches aren’t crystal clear in your mind, it’s impossible to sing a clean run.
So next time you face a virtuosic passage, hum the line ten times one octave lower.
Trust me - you’ll thank me later.
