5 Art Songs
for COLORATURA practice
(almost stress free)
Dear Coloratura Nerds,
Have you ever felt overwhelmed by coloratura opera arias?
Let’s start with something shorter and simpler that can gradually lead you into the operatic repertoire without excessive stress.
I’ve selected five art songs that include coloratura passages - some quite easy and others a bit more advanced.
The keys are for high voice, but feel free to transpose them. :)

1) "Ah, mai non cessate" – S. Donaudy
From his collection Arie in Stile Antico, this lovely arietta is perfect to include in your next recital.
2) "Die Sylphide" – C. Loewe
A rare gem. When I sang it, I remember that finding the vocal score wasn't easy (you’re welcome!).
It’s the perfect Lied to familiarize yourself with the German repertoire and is especially suitable for lighter voices.
3) "Ad onta del fato" – I. Colbran
If you know me, you know that I’m always promoting female composers. Isabella Colbran is mostly remembered as an opera diva and Rossini’s wife, but she also composed several ariettas.
This may not be a musical masterpiece, but it is certainly an excellent training ground for developing your coloratura technique.
4) "Or che di fiori adorno" – G. Rossini
Certainly not Rossini’s most famous piece, but if you have little experience with his operas, I warmly suggest learning a few of his art songs first.
Rossini has a very distinctive compositional style, and it’s a smart idea to explore ariettas such as Or che di fiori adorno before rushing into the operatic repertoire.
5) "Nixe Binsefuss" – P. Viardot
There is nothing easy about this Lied. It requires advanced pronunciation skills and strong storytelling abilities. However, I’ve included it in this list because the coloratura itself is not particularly demanding.
It’s perfect for singers who already have some experience with the German Lied repertoire and want to add something that incorporates vocal agility.
